KESC PAID RS. 69 BILLION TO WAPDA, SSGC AND IPPS: CEO

The Karachi Electric Supply Company, during the past one year, has paid Rs. 69 billion to its providers: Wapda, SSGC and IPPs.
This was stated by Mr. Tabish Gauhar, CEO of KESC, at a reception given in his honour by the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry here on Thursday. Dispelling the view that KESC had not made its payments, he said that the management of the utility, after its takeover in September last year, had made huge payments to its providers.
He disclosed that “Rs. 21 billion had been paid to Wapda in return of the electricity received; Rs. 34 billion to Sui Southern Gas Company for buying gas; and Rs. 14 billion to various Independent Power Plants including Tapal, Gul Ahmed and others. Therefore, the impression that KESC has not been paying to the providers, is totally incorrect.”

WEDDING DEADLINE CONSERVES 40MWS:

Mr. Siddiqui further said that the proposal for closing marriage halls and lawns at 12:00 midnight had been initiated by KESC in April this year. The City Government, various social organisations, the Shadi Halls Association and other interested quarters supported the plan. Finally the Sindh Government enforced an order this effect. The impact of the said order is conservation of 40MW of electricity amounting to Rs. 230.4 million, which would also reduce carbon emissions by 3998.592 metric tons.
He said that interactive sessions had been in progress with industrialists’ associations, trade bodies, and individual consumers like domestic users, small traders, shopping centers and big restaurants etc., to achieve the target which was not only energy saving plan but also would prove cost effective. He explained that the installation of 200-MW plant would require investment of approximately $ 200 million.
During the course of campaign, he said, the KESC faced lot of challenges such as mind set of the consumers as changing small habits have great results in this regards. As a result of energy surveys conducted of various consumers by KESC Energy Conservation Teams so far, approximately 90 MWS of electricity are expected to be saved. More surveys are under process for saving another 60 MWS.
